Dolphins Pull Away From Mount Saint Mary On Senior Night

Riverdale, N.Y. – College of Mount Saint Vincent senior center Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted her team leading 14th double-double and reached double-figures in rebounds for the 10th time this season on Wednesday in a 71-48 home win over Mount Saint Mary on Senior Night.

 

Mount Saint Vincent trailed for much of the first half on Wednesday and fell behind by seven points with 12:40 left in the first half after a Bridget Kelly jumper pushed the visiting Knights in front 13-6.

 

The Dolphins battled back to take a 30-26 lead with 3:25 left before halftime following a conversion from Fraser, but saw the visitors close the period with the final five points to take a 31-30 lead into the intermission. The Dolphins did not record a field goal in the half after the Fraser bucket and Mount Saint Mary's final six points of the period came from the free-throw line.

 

Mount Saint Vincent trailed at the half for just the fourth time this season after shooting 36.1-percent from the floor overall and 21.4-percent from three-point range. Mount Saint Mary converted at a 45.8-percent rate and outscored the Dolphins 8-1 at the free-throw line. Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) led all scorers at the break with 13 points.

 

Coming out of halftime, Mount Saint Vincent scored the first six points of the half to take the lead for good in the game. Mount Saint Mary would stay within seven points until a 17-1 run, covering over nine minutes pushed the Dolphins' lead to a game-high 21 points with just under six minutes left to play.

 

Freshman Kelly Nola (Staten Island, N.Y.) started the run for the Mount with a layup and was one of seven Mount Saint Vincent players to score over that stretch. The Mount held the Knights to 0-for-12 shooting over the spurt and forced four turnovers.

 

Mount Saint Vincent shot better than 55-percent from the floor in the second half and outscored Mount Saint Mary 41-17. The Dolphins, led by 11 points from Fraser after halftime, held a convincing 24-4 advantage in the paint after halftime.

 

Fraser closed out the game with 17 points to lead all scorers on 8-for-18 shooting. She grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and added two blocked shots and three steals. Barone finished the night with 15 points, going 6-for-10 from the floor, including three triples. She handed out six assists and collected four steals.

 

Sophomore Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the third Mount Saint Vincent player to score in double-figures in the game, netting 11 points and dishing out four assists. Allison Clarke (East Northport, N.Y.) came off the bench to score seven points for the Dolphins and secure four rebounds.

 

The visitors were paced on Wednesday by 13 points from Nicole Scicutella and got a double-double from Jessica Rini who finished with 10 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

 

Mount Saint Vincent closed the night shooting 44.6-percent from the floor and held Mount Saint Mary to 28.6-percent overall and 11.1-percent from three-point distance. The Dolphins held a 34-16 edge in paint points and a 21-10 advantage in points off of turnovers.

 

Wednesday's win improves Mount Saint Vincent to 17-5 overall on the season and to 7-3 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will hit the road on Saturday afternoon when they travel to St. Joseph's-L.I. Tip-off with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
