Women's Basketball Falls to In-State Rival Conn. College

New London, Conn. – The Trinity College women's basketball team lost to Connecticut College, 70-53, on Thursday evening inside Luce Field House. The Bantams move to 1-5 with the non-conference loss, while the Camels improve to 5-1. The triumph for the hosts snapped a two-game losing skid versus Trinity.

Offensively, the Bantams had three players in double figures led by junior center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) with 17 points, three steals, two blocks and seven rebounds. Sophomore swing player Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) registered the team's first double-double of the season netting 11 points and grabbing 11 boards. Junior guard Christina Raiti was the other Trinity player in double figures, scoring 12 points, thanks to knocking down a pair of shots from beyond the arc. Raiti also did a good job distributing the ball, dishing out a team-high four assists.

Connecticut College also had a trio of players score in double figures as forward Mairead Hynes poured in a game-high 26 points and pulled down 20 boards. Guard Liz Malman added 17 points and forward Amelia King scored 12 points to go along with six rebounds. Camles point guard Carlee Smith registered nine points and dished out a game-high seven assists.

Trinity came out hot early, building a four-point lead at 11-7 five minutes into play after a Griffin jumper. Midway through the first half, the Bantams built their lead to as many as five at 17-12 following a pair of free throws by Griffin. Connecticut College would come storming back on a 15-0 run to build a 10-point advantage following a free throw by Malman. During the run, the Camels forced four turnovers and Trinity missed seven shots over a six-minute stretch. The Bantams battled back, closing out the opening stanza on a 12-5 run capped by a trey from Raiti just before halftime to enter the break trailing by just three.

In the second half, the Camels never trailed and after the early minutes Trinity would not pull within more than two baskets.

As a team, Conn. College shot 40 percent from the field, while the Bantams hit just north of 32 percent of their shots. The Camels outrebounded the visitors, 46-40, and outscored them in the paint, 32-22.

The Bantams return to action on Saturday, Dec. 6, hosting Anna Maria in non-conference action at Oosting Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. The Bantams are looking to get back in the win column as they are in search of their first win in front of their home crowd this season.
