ROCHESTEWR, N.Y. - Paris Hodges and Olivia Shaw combined for 31 points off the bench to spark Brandeis University to a 60-52 victory over the University of Rochester in women's basketball at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Sunday afternoon.
Shaw scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and made three steals. Paris Hodges had 15 points, one assist, and two steals. Hannah Cain led Brandeis with a game-high and career-best 18 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds.
Al Leslie had 11 points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots for Rochester. Brynn Lauer sored eight points and Sarah Kaminsky had seven.
Brandeis improved to 11-9 overall, 3-6 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester is 12-8 overall, 4-5 in the UAA.
The Yellowjackets did not shoot well, hitting only 27% from the floor (15-56) and 26% outside the arc (7-27). Brandeis made 37% of its floor shots (23-62), 29% outside the arc (4-14). The Judges were just 10 of 18 from the foul line (56%), but 6-of-6 in the last 23 seconds when they expanded a four-point lead to eight points.
Brandeis had 13 steals – three apiece by Maria Jackson and Shaw – which led to 20 points off turnovers.
A three-pointer from Rochester's Kelsey Hurley gave the Yellowjackets a 15-12 lead with seven minutes left in the half. Brandeis scored 11 straight - eight of those from Paris Hodges – to take a 23-15 led. Rochester ended the half on a 9-0 run. The Yellowjackets took the lead, 24-23, when Brynn Lauer swished a 50-footer from over midcourt just beating the halftime horn.
Two baskets from Shaw and a 3-pointer from Ceara McNamara put Brandeis up, 31-26, in the first five minutes. Rochester went ahead briefly on a trey from Emily Lewis (36-35), but Brandeis scored seven straight for a 42-36 lead.
Lauer scored five points and Leslie hit an eight footer in the lane for a 43-42 lead. The last six minutes were mostly back and forth. Rochester led, 45-44, after two free throws by Emily Lewis with 5:35 left. Hannah Cain hit a six-footer, then made two free throws to put Brandeis up, 48-45. Sarah Kaminsky sank a 3-pointer to tie it at 48-48 for Rochester.
Shaw tipped in a missed shot with 4:20 to play. She was fouled by Lauer but missed the free throw. Brandeis got the ball back and Shaw made a layup with 3:55 left for a 52-48 lead.
Two free throws by Rochester's Lauren Deming made it a two-point game again (52-50) bur Rochester could not draw level. Heather Cain drove the left baseline for a layup at 0:38.6 (54-50) and the Judges hit 6-6 from the line in the closing seconds.
