DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Eastern University used an early 14-2, first-half run and those 12 points proved to be the difference in a 74-62, Freedom Conference victory over visiting Delaware Valley College.

 

The Eagles upped their record to 15-4 overall and 7-1 and in second place in league play. The Aggies fell to 9-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play.  They share the same record as King's College for the fourth and final playoff spot with six contests to go. Delaware Valley will be home for two straight games, starting with Wednesday's encounter with Manhattanville College.

 

Eastern's run began just over five and a half minutes into the game and when the teams were notted at 11-11. Emily Lavin and Kaitlyn Dougherty hit a pair of jumpers followed by a Gina DiDomenico's three-ball.  Sam Foy went to the line for Delaware Valley and converted two foul shots before the Eagles scored the next five points to make it 25-13 at the midway point of the first half.

 

The Aggies narrowed the deficit to five at 29-24 after Kelsey Kilpatrick hit a jumper followed by a layup from Brenna Coll and a Kilpatrick trey off an assist from Coll. Eastern responded with 10 of the final 14 points in the half, six of which came from the charity stripe, and it took a 39-30 lead into the locker room.

 

After the teams traded a trio of baskets to open the second half, the Aggies got a layup from Wood and a 3-pointer from Coll to pull to within six, 43-37, with 16:32 on the clock.  The Eagles then scored eight of the game's next 11 points to regain the double-digit lead for the Eagles at 53-42.

 

Delaware Valley clawed back to within six on two different occasions, the last coming after a pair of free throws from Coll that made it 60-54 with seven minutes left in regulation.  From there, Eastern held off the Aggies with a 14-8 run to close out the game.

 

Coll led all scorers on the day with 21 points and, in the process, moved into eighth place on the school's all-time list with 1,309 points. The senior also added five rebounds and five assists. Wood finished with 16 points, seven boards. 

 

Eastern, which shot 49.1 percent from the field, was led by Meghan Nowak's 18 points and nine rebounds. Lavin recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards while Gina DiDomenico recorded 16 points, five rebounds and three assists.
