Big Second Half Sends Yellowjackets to Win Over Platteville

More news about: UW-Superior

A few halftime adjustments was all it took for the UW-Superior women's basketball team to come alive Saturday afternoon. And once the Yellowjackets found their groove, there was little the UW-Platteville Pioneers could do to stem the tide.

Taking advantage of an explosive second half offense, the Yellowjackets rallied from a four-point deficit to outscore UW-Platteville 44-25 after halftime and pull away for an impressive 67-52 win at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

UW-Superior not only claimed their fifth straight win, they improved to 15-5 overall and remained in first place in the WIAC with a 9-2 record. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Pioneers, who fell to 13-7 overall and 6-5 in league play.

Matters remained tight for the majority of the first half with neither team able to gain more than a six-point lead through halftime.

The Yellowjackets led 14-11 on a free throw by Brynn Liljander (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) at the 7:38 mark before the Pioneers went on a 12-3 run to take a 23-17 advantage on a three-pointer by Rachel Cropp with 3:21 showing on the clock.

UW-Superior went on to score the next six points for a 23-23 draw after two free throws by Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) before UW-Platteville scored the final four points to take a 27-23 lead into the intermission.

A jumper from Taylor Buckmaster early in the second half upped the Pioneers' edge to 33-27 with 16:04 remaining in regulation.

But the Yellowjackets came back to score 12 of the next 14 points to take a 39-35 lead after a Liljander three-pointer with 12:35 showing on the clock.

From there, UW-Superior pulled away to a 64-47 advantage on two free throws by Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) with just 2:43 left in the contest. UW-Platteville never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way as UW-Superior held a 41-29 edge in rebounding for the game.

The Yellowjackets were paced by Linzmeier with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Liljander finished with 19 points for the UW-Superior.

UW-Platteville was led by Alyssa Krajco with 21 points and 10 boards. Stacy Clark pitched in with 10 points for the Pioneers as well.

The Yellowjackets hit the road to face UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday. Opening tipoff against the Blugolds from Zorn Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
