Mount Saint Vincent Edged On The Road At Sage

Albany, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team fell for the second time in its last three outings on Saturday afternoon following a heartbreaking 66-65 loss on the road at Sage. Junior Theresa Carey (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) led three players in double-figures with a season-high 16 points.

 

In a tightly contested first half, Mount Saint Vincent used a 13-1 run over a span of just over five minutes to move in front 33-22 on an Allison Clarke (East Northport, N.Y.) lay-in with 1:58 left before halftime. The Gators would get their disadvantage to nine points twice in the final 1:11 of the half before the Dolphins carried a 38-28 lead into the intermission.

 

The Dolphins shot 45.2-percent from the floor in the opening period and connected on half of their 12 three-point field goal attempts. The Gators went 9-for-29 from the floor and allowed 17 Mount Saint Vincent points off of turnovers. Carey and Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Dolphins at the break with eight points apiece.

 

Coming out of halftime, the Dolphins took their largest lead of the game when Carroll canned a three-point field goal to push the Mount in front 44-30 with 18:30 left in regulation. The Mount maintained a lead of at least seven points of the next eight minutes and spread it back to double-figures on a Brooke West (Trenton, N.J.) free-throw with 10:43 left to play that gave the Mount a 53-43 advantage.

 

Leading by 10 at the midway point of the second half, Mount Saint Vincent saw Sage put together a 15-0 run to move in front 58-53 on a Frankie Pearson triple with 6:49 left in regulation. The Gators would move in front 60-55 on an Amie Jefferson lay-in before the Mount scored eight of the next nine points to take a 63-61 lead on a Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) bucket with 3:47 left to play.

 

Mount Saint Vincent would be held to just two points after the Fraser conversion, but the bucket from Nicole Oliver (Carmel, N.Y.) would give the Dolphins a 65-64 lead with just over a minute left in the second period.

 

The one point lead would hold until a pair of Jefferson free-throws gave the Gators the final 66-65 lead with six seconds left in regulation. The Dolphins would have the ball for a final time, but a Megan Bowman steal in the final second secured the win for the Gators.

 

The Dolphins were held to 31.4-percent shooting in the second half and went just 1-for-5 from the free-throw line after halftime. The Gators converted at a rate just shy of 41-percent in the second half and outscored the Mount 8-1 from the free-throw line, despite misfiring on 12 attempts in the second stanza.

 

Bowman led all scorers in the game for Sage with 17 points to go along with six assists and three steals. Jefferson totaled 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds with Pearson and Sara Tironi adding 13 and 10 points, respectively.

 

Carey rounded out the game 6-for-12 from the floor, hitting a career-high four three-point field goals for the Dolphins. She also handed out a career-high seven assists in the game and matched her career mark with a team-high five steals.

 

Fraser finished the day with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds to go along with three blocks and three steals. Carroll scored 11 points for the Mount and Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored eight points and handed out five assists.

 

Mount Saint Vincent shot 37.9-percent from the floor overall and 45.5-percent from three-point range. The Gators also struggled from the floor, shooting 36.1-percent overall and finished the game shooting below 50-percent from the free-throw line, but outscored the Mount 15-5 from the stripe.

 

Following Saturday's loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 13-4 overall and to 4-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will return to action on Tuesday when they welcome Farmingdale State to the Peter Jay Sharp Center. Tip-off with the Rams is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
