Providence, R.I.-Junior forward Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) scored a game-high 20 points as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team fell, 62-55, against Little East Conference foe UMass Boston at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.
The teams traded baskets early with the Anchorwomen (6-13, 4-5 LEC) holding a 10-9 advantage following a three-pointer from sophomore guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) with 13:25 to play. The Beacons (12-7, 5-4 LEC) responded with an 11-2 run, capped by a layup from junior forward Olivia Murphy (Canton, MA) with 10:51 left in the half. RIC cut the deficit down to one, 22-21, but UMB used a late surge to take a nine-point, 30-21, lead into halftime. The Beacons held a 14-2 points in the paint advantage in the half.
The first 7:57 of the second half saw the two teams trade baskets, with the Beacons holding on to a 10-point, 41-31, advantage. The Anchorwomen used a quick 8-0 run, capped with a layup from sophomore guard Jessica Patalano (Exeter, RI), to cut the Beacons' lead to two, 41-39, with 7:33 left in the half. The Anchorwomen pulled within one later in the half, but the Beacons used a dominant post game to secure the seven-point, 62-55 victory.
Hill led the Anchorwomen with 20 points, four rebounds and one block. Freshman guard Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, MA) tallied 11 points to go along with six assists and five steals, while Patalano scored eight points off the bench. The Anchorwomen shot 32.2 percent (19-for-59) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-for-17) from three-point range and 75.0 percent (12-for-16) from the charity stripe for the game.
Murphy notched a double-double for the Beacons with 14 points and 12 boards while her frontcourt mate, senior center Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, MA) scored 17 points to go along with six rebounds. The Beacons shot 46.5 percent from the floor (20-for-43) and 67.9 percent from the free throw line (19-for-28), while shooting 27.3 percent (3-for-11) from downtown.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Tufts on Tuesday, Feb. 3 (7 p.m.).
