Assist Record Equaled In Hope Women's Basketball Win Over Alma

A record-tying seven assists from guard Brittany Berry and a game-high 16 points from forward Maura McAfee powered the Hope College women's basketball team to a 72-53 win against Alma on Wednesday.

The nationally ranked Flying Dutch pushed their win streak to three games while improving to 17-2 overall and 9-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

Berry tied Julie Henderson's DeVos Fieldhouse single-game assist record from a February 24, 2006, game against Calvin. The senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Catholic Central HS), finished with 10 points and three 3-pointers.

Berry now has 196 career 3-pointers in 103 games – second-most all-time by a Flying Dutch player. Jordyn Boles is the career leader with 218 3s in 120 games over four seasons from 2004-08.

McAfee, who shot 75 percent from the field (8-of-12), also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. The junior from Midland, Michigan (Midland HS), also blocked four shots, collected three steals and dished out three assists.

Hope opened on a 12-2 run against Alma (7-10, 2-8 MIAA) and never trailed. The Flying Dutch built a 40-22 halftime lead.

Hope completed a season sweep of the Scots. The Flying Dutch won 72-53 at Alma on December 6.

Hope entered the game ranked 12th in the USA Today Sports NCAA Division III coaches poll and 13th in the d3hoops.com rankings.

The Flying Dutch return to action on Saturday, January 31, at Saint Mary's. Tipoff is 3 p.m.
