Royals In Full Control In 89-43 Romp Over Bridgewater

More news about: Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, VA --- It was all EMU Tuesday night in Harrisonburg, as the women's basketball team rolled to a lopsided 89-43 win over Bridgewater College.  Eastern Mennonite's seventh straight win between the rivals turned out to be the largest margin of victory for either team this millennium.

The Eagles earned the opening tip and got a bucket on their first possession for the initial lead.  That was the high point for BC, as the Royals took off to a 21-6 lead just 6:42 into play.  Shakeerah Sykes (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) had 10 points and eight rebounds by halftime and Sa'Mone Moore (Covington, Va./Covington) canned all four of her shots for 12 points as EMU led 44-21 at the break.

The trend continued in the second half, as the women continued to hit their shots and Bridgewater continued to struggle.  The cushion ballooned to 67-29 with 12:45 to play, and the Royals generally had their third team on the floor by the midway point of the period.

Eastern Mennonite's offense was a well-oiled machine in the win, finishing at a 56.7% shooting clip, their highest mark of the season.  The women were also 8-17 from three point range, with the 47.1% number being their third best of the year.  The Eagles, meanwhile, shot a season worst 26.2% from the floor including just 2-14 from outside.  The Royals also had a 46-32 control of rebounding.

Jess Rheinheimer (Manheim, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) led four women in double figures as she dumped in 17 counters with six rebounds.  Sykes finished with a double double at 12 points and 10 boards.  Moore came in with 14 points, her highest output since scoring 17 against Emory & Henry on Nov. 29.

Marla zumFelde (Goshen, Ind./Bethany Christian) hit for 10 points and five rebounds.  Alisa Brown (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) had nine points and four steals, while Alicia Ygarza (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) had a game high four assists.

Cassidy Burkholder led Bridgewater with 13 points and eight rebounds.

EMU improves to 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the ODAC, while the Eagles slide to 9-8 and 4-5.  A key week continues for Eastern Mennonite on Saturday as they host fifth place Virginia Wesleyan.  Game time with the up-tempo Marlins in Yoder Arena is at 2:00pm.
