Sabres Top Inferno In Overtime

MILWAUKEE -- Despite four Inferno players scoring in double-figures, visiting Marian University topped Alverno College, 70-66, in overtime Saturday night inside Reiman Gymnasium.

Julie Gallegos scored 16 points, Brooke McBain and Mollie Mikyska had 15, and Tessa Mersberger added 12 for the Inferno (4-13, 2-10 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference), which finished a four-game homestand 1-3.

Mikyska tied the game on a three-point play with just under a minute left in regulation, and McBain put the Inferno up, 61-59, with 11 ticks left on a layup from the left block.

However, Sarah Olewinski, who led all scorers with 26 points, answered with a runner on the Sabres' next play to send the game in to overtime.

Alverno looked to control the extra period as back-to-back baskets by Mikyska and Gallegos gave the hosts a four-point lead with 2:30 remaining, but Marian (11-7, 7-6 NACC) scored the next five points and went in front 67-66 with 24 seconds left after a pair of free throws by Jessica Roberts.

Jennifer Totten was fouled and sent to the foul line with 10 seconds left on the clock, but the Inferno's lone senior was unable to connect on either attempt. Mersberger came up with the offensive rebound -- her 10th of the game -- on the second miss, but her jumper just outside of the paint was off the mark and the Sabres made 3-of-4 free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

Marian, which won its second-consecutive game in overtime, was 15-of-22 from the free-throw line, while Alverno was just 5-of-12.

The game was Alverno's first extra-period contest of the season after playing in six overtime games last year.

Alverno hits the road for its next game on Wednesday at Benedictine University. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
