Strong Second Half Powers Bridgewater Past Hollins

ROANOKE, Va. - Bridgewater College rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit Saturday afternoon to defeat Hollins University 67-59 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball action.

Bridgewater improved to 9-7 overall while leveling its ODAC record at 4-4. Hollins dropped to 2-14 overall and 0-8 in conference play.

The Eagles held a 16-14 edge as the first-half approached the midway point, but a 10-minute scoreless spell allowed Hollins to open up a 12-point lead.

A 3-pointer by Cassidy Burkholder with 11:21 left in the first half gave the Eagles their 16-14 lead. Bridgewater would not score again until Oshene Kelly converted a three-point play with 1:29 left in the half. During the scoreless stretch, Hollins scored 14 unanswered points.

After Kelly's three-point play snapped the Eagles scoring drought, Hollins' Taylor Catron answered with a three-point play at the other end to put the hosts ahead 31-19. Burkholder hit two foul shots with 54 seconds left in the half to pull the Eagles to within 10 points, 31-21, and that's the way the first half ended.

Hollins kept the margin in double figures for the first five minutes of the second half and then the Eagles started to chip away at the lead.

A three-point play by Kelly pulled the Eagles to within eight and a jumper by Burkholder made it a six-point game, 42-36, with 12:54 left to play.

After Kelly made 1-of-2 at the line, a jumper by Hollins' Britney Campbell pushed the margin back to seven, 44-37. Two foul shots by Jessica Lam and two more by Heather Cantrell sliced the margin to three, 44-41, with 10:24 remaining.

Bridgewater finally pulled even with 7:07 left when Jessi Strom knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key, tying the score at 47-47.

Campbell's three-point play gave Hollins a 50-47 lead, but jumpers by Cantrell and Strom gave Bridgewater its first lead of the second half, 51-50, with 4:47 left.

A 3-pointer by Jewellanna Parfitt pushed Hollins back out front before a jumper by Lam tied the score and two free throws by Cantrell gave the Eagles a 55-53 advantage.

Kelly and Campbell traded hoops before a layup by Lam put the Eagles up 59-55 with 2:26 on the clock.

The Eagles opened up some breathing room as a free throw by Lam and a jumper by Strom made the score 62-55 with 1:01 left to play.

Parfitt hit 1-of-2 at the line for Hollins before two free throws by Burkholder pushed the Eagles lead to eight, 64-56, with 46 seconds remaining.

Hollins pulled to with five on a 3-pointer by Giselle Verville, but Burkholder hit 3-of-4 foul shots in the final 22 seconds to finish off the 67-59 Eagles' victory.

Burkholder led four Eagles in double figures with a game-high 19 points. Kelly finished with 15 points while Strom and Cantrell each scored 12.

Parfitt paced Hollins with 17 points, followed by Campbell with 14 and Catron with 13.

The Eagles controlled the boards by a 45-38 margin. Freshman forward Jessalyn Monday pulled down 11 rebounds and Kelly grabbed 10 boards to complete her double-double. Parfitt grabbed 10 rebounds for Hollins.
