Murphy's Double-Double Puts Tartans over Rochester

Lisa Murphy scored a season's high 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to pace visiting Carnegie Mellon to a 68-57 victory over the University of Rochester in women's basketball at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday evening.

It was a balanced effort for Murphy, She added three assists, made three steals, and blocked two shots. Lindsay Poss scored 11 points with four assists, three steals, and six rebounds for CMU (10-4 overall, 2-2 University Athletic Association).

Ally Zywicki led Rochetser with 17 points, including five three-point goals. Al Leslie had eight points and six rebounds. Brynn Lauder scored six points and compiled five assists. The Yellowjackets are 9-6 overall, 1-3 UAA.

A slow start by CMU gave Rochester the chance to jump in front by as much as seven three times. With the Tartans within two points, Zywicki sank a 3-pointer and Leslie followed with a layup after a pass from Kayla Kibling (16-9, 8:35 left). Murphy scored two layups in the next two minutes but Rochester answered each time – first on a layup by Sarah Kaminsky (18-11), then on a jumper by Leslie (from Kaminsky). That made it 20-13 with 6:02 left in the first half.

Carnegie gnawed at the deficit, getting it down to two points twice, the last time on two Murphy free throws 1:21 before halftime. The Tartans tied it at 23-23 on a jumper by Liza Otto with 11 seconds left.

In the second half, the Tartans edged in front by as much as five (31-26 on two Murphy free throws). Rochester tied it at 35-all on a 3-pointer from Kibling, then at 40-all when Zywicki drained a 3-pointer at 8:45. Layups by Kelsey Hurley and Lauer pushed Rochester ahead, 44-42. Murphy's layup tied it at 44-44, and Njaire McKoy's jumper put the guests ahead to stay at 46-44.

Zywicki's fifth 3-pointer of the night got Rochester within a point at 48-47. The Yellowjacket offense hit a cold spell and the Tartans scored seven straight, building the advantage to 55-47 with 3:55 on the clock. Chandler Caufield scored five points in less than two minutes – a 3-pointer and two free throws, to push the edge to 62-51 with 1:18 left.
