Inferno Lets One Slip Away Against Cougars

MILWAUKEE -- A season-high offensive output wasn't enough for Alverno College, which suffered a 95-89 heartbreaking loss to visiting Concordia University Chicago Tuesday night inside Reiman Gymnasium.

A pair of free throws by Mollie Mikyska with 4 minutes, 46 seconds left in the first half gave the Inferno a 37-36 lead -- a lead they would hold until the Cougars went ahead 83-82 with 2:15 left in the game on a Jaela DeJean jumper.

Concordia Chicago would force four Alverno turnovers over the next five possessions and increase their lead to eight with under a minute to play, too much for the host team to overcome.

Four Inferno players scored in double-figures led by Mikyska's 24 points. Julie Gallegos put up a career-high 22 points, Tessa Mersberger added 17 and Brooke McBainhad 11 as the team shot 40 percent from the field in the home defeat.

A 12-of-32 performance from the 3-points arc tied Alverno single-game records. The Inferno also made 12 3s versus California Institute of Technology in December of 2011, and shot 32 treys at Concordia Chicago in December of 2013.

Alverno (4-12, 2-9 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) had the edge on the glass, 54-42, led by Mikyska's game-best 16 rebounds and McBain's 11 as both posts tallied double-doubles.

Mersberger dished out a career-high nine assists and Gallegos added six.

DeJean led one of five Cougars in double-digits with 21 points, including 8-of-11 from the charity stripe.

The visitors also made 12 3-pointers in the game, but on three fewer attempts than the Inferno.

A decicive 29 to 12 advantage on points off turnovers went the way of the Cougars (10-7, 8-6 NACC).

Alverno will look to put the loss behind as the team hosts Marian University on Saturday to close out the current four-game homestand. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
