Marymount Women’s Basketball Sinks Christopher Newport

Arlington, Va. – Seven appeared to be a lucky number for the Marymount women's basketball squad on Saturday afternoon, as the Saints outscored Christopher Newport  by seven points each half – sinking the Captains, 58-44, when all was said and done.

Marymount improves to 10-5 on the season and 6-2 in league play – good for third place in CAC standings.

Kiki Laux led all scorers with an impressive 17-point performance from the post.  The sophomore tied her career-high with the effort.

Kievanna Lacey hurled in 13 points as well, with Samantha Kane quietly racking up nine points and nine rebounds to round out the attack.

The much-anticipated match-up saw the Saints erupt for a 9-0 run out of the gate, using points from four different players to swipe the early advantage.

The Captains eventually crawled back within four, 18-14, but their 14 first-half turnovers did the team no favors as the first 20 minutes came to a close.  Marymount continued to pressure Christopher Newport's offense, using the miscues to put away nine points and take a 26-19 lead into the break.

The squads traded layups early in the second frame, but almost three minutes fell away before Miranda Krott powered through the lane for her second bucket of the half.

A pair of triples from the Captains cut the deficit to five, 32-27, with 14:54 remaining – the beginning of an assault that would bring the visitors within one on multiple occasions within the final ten minutes.

A jumper from Kendra Stone brought the Captains painstakingly close, 38-37, with 9:10 left to play, and the gap would be just as slim twice more, though the visitors would never tie it.

Two free throws saw Christopher Newport inch within one at the 6:53 mark, but this time the Saints had no intention of keeping the game so close.

Marymount closed out the contest with an absolutely explosive 16-3 run – shutting the door on any Captain comeback and swiping the game, 58-44.

The Saints return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Penn State Harrisburg.  The CAC tilt is slated for a 6 p.m. tip.
