Anderson Reaches 1,000 Career Points as R-MC Outscores VWC

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) recorded her eight double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds while becoming the 19th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team outlasted Virginia Wesleyan 80-74 Tuesday evening in ODAC action at Crenshaw Gymnasium for its sixth straight victory.

Anderson made a layup with 12:30 remaining in the second half to put her over the 1,000 mark. She now has 1,009 career points for the Yellow Jackets (11-2, 4-1 ODAC).

Senior Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) and junior Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) both tallied 22 points for R-MC.

The Marlins (9-5, 3-2 ODAC) led for the first six minutes before a three-pointer by Parsons gave the home team its first lead at 12-11 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the half. VWC led 17-16 before an 11-3 spurt put the Yellow Jackets on top 27-20 with 2:22 to go in the period. R-MC led by as many as nine before taking a 34-27 lead the locker room at the half. Livermon led all scorers with 14 in the first period.

The Yellow Jackets used an 8-2 burst three minutes into the second half to enjoy its largest lead of 13 at 42-29. VWC put together a 17-7 run to cut the margin to three at 49-46 with 12 minutes left. R-MC pushed its advantage back to 13 at 64-51 with eight minutes remaining. The Marlins scored 11 of the next 13 points to narrow the gap to four at 66-62 with 5:40 left. VWC would get as close as three at 75-72 with 1:05 left before Anderson scored a layup and Parsons made a free throw to make it 78-72. Following a Marlin layup, junior Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to make the final 80-74.

R-MC held a 57-47 advantage on the boards. Junior Lauren Vugteveen (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) had 12 rebounds and seven blocks for the victors.

Andrea Paphites had 18 points, while Brittany Glasco added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Marlins.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 17 with a 2 p.m. home ODAC contest against Guilford at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
