Farmingdale State - 62, The Sage Colleges - 60
Albany, N.Y. - Farmingdale State junior forward Marlaina Sherman (Miller Place, N.Y.) broke a 60-60 tie as she scored the game-winning layup with six seconds remaining leading the women's basketball team to a two-point victory over The Sage Colleges on Friday night.
Trailing 50-49 with 5:43 remaining, Farmingdale State (5-7, 1-0) regained the lead on an Andrea Desvignes (Deer Park, N.Y.) layup and later extended their advantage to five, 55-50, with less than five minutes to play.
Farmingdale led 59-54 with 2:28 on the clock, before junior forward Sara Tironi (Cambridge, N.Y.) scored on a layup to cut the Sage (5-4, 0-1) deficit to three.
With 57 seconds remaining, Farmingdale State sophomore guard Nicole Gomez (Deer Park, N.Y.) was fouled and converted 1-of-2 at the line to put the Rams ahead, 60-56. The Gators answered with a jump shot and a pair of free-throws from senior guard Megan Bowman (Dannemora, N.Y.) to tie the game at 60-60.
Sherman netted the game-winning score with six seconds left to play as the Rams earned a 62-20 victory in their Skyline Conference opener.
Desvignes recorded a team-high 20 points on 10-of-17 shooting and added nine rebounds and four assists, while Sherman scored 11 points and blocked a game-high four shots. Senior guard Nicole Lanteri (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added 10 points, four assists and four steals in the win.
Sage was led by Tironi who notched a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Farmingdale State next will host Old Westbury in a conference game on Thursday, January 15th at 6:00 p.m.
