The University of Rochester women's basketball team used a balanced team effort and some timely 3-point shooting to power past Emory University 66-42 on Saturday afternoon at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
The win kicks off the UAA conference season for Rochester who moves to 9-3 on the year (1-0 UAA). Emory's record drops to 8-4 overall, 0-1 in the conference.
The Yellowjackets played a total of 13 players in the game and got at least a point from 12 of them. As a team, UR made 10 3-pointers, a season high, with seven different players draining a long range shot. Emory struggled on the offensive end, shooting just 25.6% (20-78) from the floor en route to a season low 42 points.
Rochester was led by junior Emily Lewis with a game high 12 points. She also recorded two treys and pulled down eight rebounds. Freshman Alexandra Leslie scored nine points and grabbed 12 boards, narrowly missing her fifth double-double this year. Lauren Deming and Sarah Kaminsky each added nine points off the bench for the Yellowjackets. As a team, UR's bench outscored the Eagles subs by a 42-13 margin.
Both teams struggled mightily in the opening minutes of the game as the score was 2-2 for over six minutes. Rochester then broke it open with 15-2 spurt, a run that featured four three's. Kaminsky hit two, Brynn Lauer one and Leslie drained her first long ball of the year. That followed by a Deming old-fashioned 3-point play.
With under five to play in the first, Rochester extended the lead with another big run, going on a 16-2 run aided by three more 3-pointers. This time it was Lewis, Kayla Kibling and Kelsey Hurley from long range. At the half, Rochester was up 39-20.
The 'Jackets would then score 20 of the first 29 points over the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, building a game high lead of 30 points at 59-29.
Emory was led by Ilene Tsao who scored 11 points and grabbed a team high seven rebounds. Michelle Bevan recorded eight points while Khadijah Sayyid added 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals.
Rochester returns to the court in a little less than a week when it travels on its annual Midwest road trip, heading to Chicago on Friday night and will play at Washington-St. Louis on Sunday. Emory will make the same trip, playing the same opponents on opposite days.
