Raiders Roll Past Inferno, Retain Red Rivalry Cup

More news about: Alverno

MILWAUKEE -- The Red Rivalry Cup was retained by the Raiders as Milwaukee School of Engineering defeated host Alverno College, 63-53, Saturday night in Reiman Gymnasium.

The Raiders (11-3, 7-2 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) were held to just 29 percent shooting by the Inferno defense, but connected on 20 of their 28 trips to the free-throw line and held a 47-41 edge on the glass.

The Inferno (3-11, 1-8 NACC) was plagued by 21 turnovers in the team's third-straight home loss, fourth overall.

Alverno took a 18-17 lead on a Mollie Mikyska jumper with 10 minutes, 15 seconds remaining in the first half, but MSOE outscored the hosts 13-5 to close out the period for a 30-23 lead at intermission.

The Raiders increased their lead to 21 a third of the way into the second half, before the Inferno closed the gap to 11 with under 10 minutes to play. The spread would remain double-digits the rest of the way, however, as MSOE eared the series sweep for the season.

Mikyska led all scored with 22 points and added 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Julie Gallegos added 12 points for the Inferno with an 8-of-9 performance from the free-throw line and added four blocked shots on the defensive end.

Holly Denfeld led MSOE with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Shaylan Reardon scored 15.

Next up for the Inferno is Lakeland College on Wednesday evening. Tipoff is 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
