Dolphins Top Berkeley, Win Third Straight Game

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team picked up its third straight win on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 71-49 non-conference win over visiting Berkeley. Sophomore Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the offensive attack with a game-high 21 points.

 

The Dolphins never trailed in the game and quickly opened a double-figure advantage on a Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) lay-in that put the Mount in front 14-4 just over four minutes into the game. The Mount Saint Vincent lead would not sink below 10 points the rest of the day and expanded to 21 points on a Carroll fast break conversion that closed a 17-2 run for the Dolphins at the midway point of the half.

 

Mount Saint Vincent would not allow Berkeley closer than 18 points the rest of the half and a bucket from Allison Clarke (East Northport, N.Y.) pushed the Dolphins advantage to a half-high 26 points, at 41-16, with 4:01 left in the first stanza.

 

The Mount closed the first half shooting 47.1-percent overall and 42.9-percent from behind the arc in building a 43-22 lead after 20 minutes of play. Carroll finished the period 5-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-4 from behind the arc to lead all scorers at the break with 12 points. The Mount held a 10-0 edge in fast break points at the half and outscored Berkeley in the paint 18-6.

 

Berkeley would get as close as 16 points with 7:36 left in regulation time on Saturday, but the Mount would use a 14-3 spurt capped by a Kelly Nola (Staten Island, N.Y.) bucket to grab its largest lead of the game, 71-44, with 3:51 remaining in the game.

 

Mount Saint Vincent converted at just under 41-percent from the floor in the second half and was led by nine second half points from Carroll. The Mount assisted on nine of its 11 second half field goals, with Gabriella Melgar (Branford, Conn.) handing out four helpers.

 

Carroll rounded out the game 9-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-6 from behind the arc as she scored 20 points in a game for the second time this season. She added two assists and three steals. Fraser picked up her sixth double-double of the season, posting 10 points and matching the game-high with 10 rebounds. Fraser also blocked a game-high three shots.

 

Clarke and Theresa Carey (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) each scored 12 points for the Dolphins with Clarke reaching double-figures for the second time this season and Carey netting a season-high point total. Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) rounded out the game with a game-high nine assists for the Mount.

 

Mount Saint Vincent shot better than 40-percent from the floor for the first time in five games on Saturday, finishing at 44.3-percent overall. The Mount held Berkeley to 22.2-percent shooting, including an 11.1-percent effort in the first half.

 

With the victory Mount Saint Vincent improves to 8-2 overall on the season. The Dolphins will open Skyline Conference on Tuesday night when they travel to Mount Saint Mary. Tip-off with the Knights is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
