Explosive Offense Propels Warhawks over UW-River Falls

Guard Brooke Trewyn led all scorers with 16 points on 6-8 from the floor, 2-3 from behind the arc and 2-2 from the free throw line. The freshman led UW-Whitewater on the boards with five rebounds in the contest. Sophomore guard Reilly Stewart added 12 points on a perfect 4-4 performance from long range. Junior forward knocked down 11 and posted a game-high four assists. Freshman forward Andrea Meinert rounded out the double digit scorers for the Warhawks with 10 points on 4-6 from the field.

The Falcons jumped out to a nine point lead, 13-4, with 15:12 on the clock. The Warhawks came back to take their first lead of the contest with a 13-0 streak to make it 17-13 with 9:41 remaining in the half.

UW-River Falls regained the lead, 19-18, at the 7:12 mark but the Warhawks answered and would not trail the rest of the way. After the Falcons knotted the score 23-23 with 5:03 left, UW-Whitewater took over the lead and extended the advantage to eight points at intermission. 

UW-Whitewater outscored UW-River Falls 26-14 on points off the bench. The Warhawks set a blistering offensive pace knocking down 69.6% (16-23) of their shots from the field and 83.3% (5-6) from long range in the first half. The Falcons shot 48.4% (15-31) from the field and were just 1-6 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.

Just over 10 seconds into the second half, Lisa Palmer found Kate McKay down low for a quick two to give the Warhawks their first double figure lead of the evening, 45-35. 

The Falcons whittled the lead down to four twice, the second time with 9:49 remaining when the Warhawks went on a 14-1 run to take a 17-point, 66-49, lead with 4:24 on the clock.

UW-Whitewater posted the largest margin of the game as Andrea Meinert hit a jumper with four-tenths of a second left in the game for the final score 77-55. 

The Warhawks shot 58.3% making 28-48 from the field. From three-point range, UW-Whitewater was 7-11, a 63.6 percentage. The Warhawks were also efficient from the charity stripe making 14-19, 73.7%, in the game. 

The Warhawk defense held the Falcons to just 38.1% from the field in the second half for a final game shooting percentage of 44.2. 

UW-Whitewater will head to Superior to take on the Yellowjackets Wednesday, December 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
