Pioneers close out 2014 with win

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College basketball team had two double-figure scorers and shot 48.1 percent from the floor as the Pioneers closed out 2014 with a 65-41 win over Bridgewater State University Wednesday afternoon.

First-year Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) set a new career high with 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three, and added three rebounds and a pair of assists. Classmate Amanda Barriscale (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais)scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, while first-year Samantha Alakai (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) added eight points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Holland, who had 10 points in the first half, scored five of Smith's first nine points of the contest as her three from the corner at 12:08 cut the Bears early advantage down to three (12-9). The Bears went on an 8-3 run in a 6:06 span in the middle of the first half, giving Bridgewater State an eight-point cushion. A Holland three highlighted a 7-0 run by Smith to cut their deficit down to one, 20-19 with 2:58 to play in the half, and after the two sides traded baskets, the Atherton, Calif. native grabbed a loose ball and beat the first half buzzer with a fade away two to tie the contest, 23-23.

The Pioneers scored the first four points of the second half, before a layup by Bridgewater State's Rachel Kusz (Worcester, Mass. /Martha's Vineyard Regional) cut Smith's lead to two (27-25) with 18:39 to play. The Pioneers outscored the Bears 15-7 over the next 5:13 to push their lead to 10 (42-32). The lead proved to be insurmountable for Bridgewater State, as Smith led by as many as 23 late in the second half.

The Blue and Gold held the Bears to a season-low 41 points in the win, while outrebounding BSU 36-18. The Pioneers made seven threes and didn't trail after the first half.

Smith will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play on Saturday (Jan. 3) when they host Wellesley College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
