BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team knocked off Shenandoah University, 57-49, in the first round of the 8th Annual CUNY Athletic Conference Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Classic, in the APEX Main Gym, on Monday afternoon. The Lightning will now face Adrian College in the Championship game, on Tuesday, at 2:00 p.m. Earlier today, Adrian defeated Kean University, 70-57.
With the win, Lehman head coach Eric Harrison is now in sole possession of second place on the all-time CUNY Athletic Conference coaches' wins list.
With the game tied at 32, with 12:15 remaining in regulation time, the Lightning (7-3) would go on to play their best stretch of the game by going on a 10-0 run, in a span of 4:08, to take a commanding 42-32 lead. Junior forward Yarmese Jones (Astoria, N.Y./William C. Bryant) started the rally by laying the ball up and in to give Lehman the lead for good, 34-32, with 12 minutes remaining. Junior guard Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) capped off Lehman's run by nailing a three-point basket to give the home team a comfortable 42-32 advantage with just 7:52 left to play.
19 of Navarro's game-high 22 points came in the second half, as the Lightning were able to hang on and win the game, 57-49, to earn a spot in the Championship game.
The first half was a low scoring affair as each team scored only 19 points. Junior forward Amani Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y./Alexander Hamilton) provided a spark for Lehman early by scoring six of her eight points in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Junior forward Karrin Walker (New York, N.Y./Richard R. Green) tallied a double-double by scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds. Sophomore guard Amely Del Rosario (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) added 11 points, while Jones and Lightbourne each forced three steals.
