WILLIAMSPORT (PA) – Delaware Valley College scored eight straight points and 10 of the final 13 as the Aggies notched a 58-52 victory over Case Western Reserve University in the final day of action at the Hoops for Hounds Classic.
Delaware Valley went 1-1 at the tournament while the victory over the Spartans (5-4) improved the squad to 5-8. The Aggies will now be off for 16 days before resuming Freedom Conference action with a trip to Manhattanville College on Wednesday, January 14.
Delaware Valley did not trail for the first 28 minutes of the contest and the lead flipped back and forth after that, including a Laura Mummey layup that gave Case Western Reserve a 49-48 advantage with 4:52 left.
The rest of the contest belonged to the Aggies, starting with a 3-pointer by Kelsey Kilpatrick just 17 seconds later. Brenna Coll and Eireann Anastasi followed with back-to-back layups and Agatha Drozd added a free throw for an 8-0 run and a 56-49 Delaware Valley lead with just 1:06 to go.
Kara Hagerman hit a trey to make it a four-point game but Coll hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the win.
Delaware Valley, which led by eight at halftime and by as many as nine in the game, committed just eight turnovers on the afternoon while forcing 15 from the Spartans. The Aggies hit six 3-pointers, including four from Brittany Wood as she finished with 15 points. Coll was named to the all-tournament team as the senior notched a game-high 18 points as well as a team-best eight rebounds. Anastasi added nine points and seven assists in the win.
Brooke Orcutt and Hagerman paced Case Western Reserve with 14 and 11 points respectively.
