No. 7 Montclair St. Outlasts Baruch in Sheraton Parsippany Holiday Tournament, 72-62

Montclair, NJ – Senior forward Melissa Tobie posted a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds in addition to blocking six shots as No. 7/8 Montclair State remained unbeaten with a 72-62 victory over Baruch College in the Sheraton Parsippany Holiday Tournament on Sunday evening.

Senior guard Janitza Aquino added 21 points, including a couple of clutch three pointers late in the second half as the Red Hawks upped their record to 11-0 and will face another unbeaten in the championship game on Monday, December 29 when MSU faces Salisbury (9-0) at 3:00 pm.

The Sea Gulls got 18 points from Sarah Seipp (Gaithersburg, MD / Gaithersburg) and 14 from Anna Hackett (Germantown, MD / Clarksburg) as Salisbury downed Illinois Wesleyan in overtime, 57-51. Gabrielle Holness (Middelbury, CT / Pomperaug Regional) had 19 points for the Titans (4-4), who meet Baruch in the third-place game at 1:00 pm.

Senior guard Francess Henry (Brooklyn, NY / Midwood) had 16 points to lead the Bearcats (4-4), who had their three-game winning streak snapped with the loss to MSU.

Montclair State never trailed an led for all but 18 seconds in the contest however it wasn't easy for the Red Hawks, who had to stave off several rallies by Baruch. Two free throws by Kate Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ / Roselle Catholic) finished off a 12-2 game-opening run for Montclair before Baruch clawed back pulling within 27-24 with 3:54 to go in the first half on a jumper by Symone Green (Albuquerque, NM / La Cueva).

Sheridan Taylor's (Peekskill, NY / Peekskill) layup with 2:22 left made it closer at 29-27 however a jumper by Katie Sire (Hazlet, NJ / Raritan) and layup by Melissa Tobie helped give MSU a 35-29 lead at the break.

Melissa Tobie connected twice from the line to open the second half making the score 37-29 before Baruch went on a 12-4 run tying the game at 41-41 on Henry's layup with 14:14 remaining. Sire and Melissa Tobie each had four points in an eight-point spurt to build the lead back up to 49-41 and the lead would stay above five points until 5:45 left when Alicea Ulmer (Staten Island, NY / M.S.I.T.) put in a layup for a 53-50 MSU advantage.

Montclair's Kayla Ceballos (Brooklyn, NY / Christ the King) answered with a three-pointer and after Ulmer scored again, Aquino drained a long three with 4:47 to go giving the Red Hawks a 59-52 lead.

The Bearcats made one last push and got within 62-60 with 2:15 remaining on Iyana Abrams' (New Rochelle, NY / New Rochelle) layup. Aquino countered for MSU with a jumper 23 seconds later and Melissa Tobie hit twice from the stripe with 1:24 left giving MSU a 66-60 lead. Aquino added two more foul shots with 31 seconds left to seal the game for the Red Hawks.

Sire finished with 13 points and six rebounds for MSU while Ceballos chipped in with seven points. Freshman Taylor Harmon (Saddle Brook, NJ / Saddle Brook) collected four points and six rebounds off the bench for Montclair State.

Taylor had 14 points and seven boards for Baruch with Abrams finishing with 12 points and four steals. Umler had nine points and eight rebounds.
