Berry falls to Rowan, 78-71

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Freshman Zarriah Pierce scored a game-high 20 points, but Berry College lost to Rowan University, 78-71, on Friday.

Rowan, which halted BC's three-game winning streak, moved to 9-1. The Vikings dropped to 7-3.

Pierce, one of four Vikings to score in double digits, was 8-13 from the field. Chanlir Segarra had 14 points and seven assists. Mel McLean contributed 13 points. Valerie McLure and Emma Cookboth added 10 points for Berry.

The Vikings were behind 31-25 at halftime. The Profs led by as many as 12 points (66-54 with 4:51 left) in the second half. BC then scored the next 10 points and tralied 66-64 with 2:41 remaining, but got no closer.

"We lost a close game, primarily due to turnovers and rebounding," said BC Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. "We did a few things well, but I can't say we played very well today."

Rowan led in rebounds, 46-44. The Profs, however, had a big edge on the offensive glass (23-9). Berry committed 24 and forced 13 Rowan turnovers.

Anyssa Sanchez paced the Profs with 17 points.

The Vikings face Messiah on Saturday at noon to close out its Florida visit.
