Red Devils Start New Era With 76-48 Win

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team opened the season with a big win in the opening round of the Days Inn Carlisle South Tip-Off Tournament at the Kline Center. It was the start of a new era, under first-year head coach Katherine Bixby, as the Red Devils jumped out to a strong start and never looked back on Saturday night.

 

The Red Devils built a 21-point lead at halftime en route to a 76-48 victory over the City College of New York. They will face Lycoming College in the Championship game at 4:00 pm on Sunday.

 

Senior Liz Schultz knocked-down a three-pointer to put Dickinson on the board. The Red Devils hit their first eight shots from the field. ClassmateSarah Phillips buried a three-pointer to put the Devils up, 14-0, in the opening four minutes of the game.

 

Schultz hit another three-pointer to stretch the lead to 21-9 at the 13:24 mark. 2014 Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year Mary Martin grabbed a rebound and scored to make the score, 30-15, with just over five minutes to play in the half.

 

The Red Devils continued to build the lead to as many as 23, and held a 42-21 advantage at halftime behind 57 percent shooting from the floor. Dickinson outscored the Beavers, 11-4 off turnovers and 15-4 on second chance points in the first half.

 

A 7-0 run to start the second half forced a quick timeout by CCNY. That would have little effect on the Devils as the lead continued to grow throughout the second half. First-year Myonie Williamson knocked-down a three-pointer and sophomoreJennifer Smith finished an assist from classmate Helen Roberts for their largest lead of the night at 72-35.

 

Schultz led the way, matching a game-high with 16 points, hitting 6-of-7 shots from the field, going 4-for-5 from three-point land. Martin came off the bench to record a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

 

Williamson finished in double-figures, scoring 13 points while Roberts added eight points, two assists and a pair of steals. Transfer Ellen Bair chipped in with four points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Kelsey Walsh handed out four assists to go with four points and five rebounds.

 

The Red Devils will tip-off at 4:00 pm on Sunday, squaring-off against Lycoming for the title. City College of New York with face Mt. Aloysius at 2:00 pm in the consolation game.
