WAYNE, N.J. – Two free throws with 0.4 second remaining allowed Brooklyn (6-3) to escape William Paterson (5-5) with a 70-68 women's basketball victory Dec. 15.

After trailing for the entire first half, the Cyclones took their first lead of the game with a pair of free throws at the 17:49 mark of the second period (32-31), and what followed were eight lead changes and three ties during the next seven minutes until WP received a jumper and a three-pointer from sophomore guard Nikole Williams (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) for a 51-47 edge with 9:43 left.

Brooklyn twice tied the score, the last on a Vanessa D'Ambrosi jumper (58-58, 6:13), but the Pioneers were 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to make it a two-possession game at 62-58 with 4:16 remaining.

Three straight Bulldog points were answered by a layup from junior forward Mary Haines (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park), but senior forward Megan Campbell cut it to one, 65-64, with a basket at the 1:32 mark. Williams made one of two attempts from the charity stripe 19 seconds later, and Campbell's jumper knotted the score at 66-66 with 56 seconds to play.

Junior guard Brittany Harden (Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart) drained a pair of free throws for a 68-66 WP edge with 31.8 seconds on the clock, but Campbell's layup again deadlocked the game at 68-68 with 24 seconds left. The Pioneers missed their next field-goal attempt and Campbell came away with the rebound, then was fouled on a three-point attempt with 0.4 second to play. She made the first two free throws, then knocked the final attempt off the front of the rim and back to herself, not allowing the Pioneers a chance at a final shot.

Harden led five William Paterson players in double figures in scoring with 14 points, adding seven rebounds. Freshman guard Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) posted 11 tallies, eight boards and six assists, and junior guard Sara Luberto (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) contributed 11 points. Haines and Williams each scored 10 tallies.

Campbell paced Brooklyn with 29 points and 15 rebounds.

It looked like the Pioneers would run away with the game early, surging out to an 8-0 advantage three minutes into the contest and leading by as many as 11 (18-7, 8:27) during the first period. The Bulldogs, however, would not fold, cutting the margin to 29-26 at the break.

William Paterson will face Regis in the first round of the Keene State Tournament Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 3:00 p.m.
