Warhawks Hand No. 9 Wheaton First Loss of Season

More news about: UW-Whitewater

The scoreboard showed a one-point game with the Warhawks leading 64-63 and 3:34 on the clock. Neither team was able to score for over three minutes. On Wheaton's fifth missed field goal in that time frame, UW-Whitewater's Brooke Trewyn tied up the loose ball rebound and the possession arrow game the Warhawks the ball under Wheaton's basket and 16 seconds remaining.

The inbound went to Trewyn who was able to take five seconds off the clock before the Thunder defense swarmed and head coach Keri Carollo called a 30 second timeout. The Warhawks went back to Trewyn on the inbounds in front of the Wheaton bench where she was fouled immediately. The freshman guard knocked down the second of the double bonus opportunity to give UW-Whitewater a 65-63 lead with 10.7 seconds to go.

The Thunder put the ball in play to Katie McDaniels who pushed the ball up the court and down the right side of the lane. McDaniels lost the handle and sophomore forward Lisa Palmer came away with the ball. A quick foul sent Palmer to the line with one second left. She drained the first, missed the second and sealed the win for UW-Whitewater over the ninth ranked team in the nation.

The game was close throughout with the Warhawks leading the majority of the first half compiling their largest lead of seven at the 12:05 mark, 17-10. Wheaton upped the tempo for the final four minutes of the first half to head into the locker rooms with a nine point advantage, 39-30.

The Thunder maintained the lead until the 5:34 mark in the second half when an old-fashioned three-point play by junior center Emily Jensen gave the Warhawks a 62-60 lead and all the momentum.

Ellie Zeller answered with two free throws on the other end to knot the score at 62. After a Warhawk turnover, the UW-Whitewater defense stepped up and stymied the Thunder offense forcing a shot clock violation to regain possession.

Trewyn took advantage driving to the lane, sinking the jumper and drawing the foul to give the Warhawks a 64-63 lead with 4:18.

McDaniels dropped in a free throw with 3:34 on the clock and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Warhawks dominated the boards in the second half, 22-14 including eight by Palmer. Jensen bolstered the UW-Whitewater offense with nine points in the second half on a perfect 4-4 from the field and 1-1 from the charity stripe.

For the game, both teams had 24 field goals but the Warhawks were more efficient shooting 52% compared to 38% for the Thunder. Each team knocked down 13 free throws. The difference in the score came from beyond the arc. The Warhawks shot 45% from three-point range with Andrea Olsen and Abbie Reeves draining two of their three opportunities each. Wheaton was just 2-9 from long range.

Palmer and Trewyn led the Warhawk offense with 14 points apiece, each going 6-10 from the floor. Palmer added 13 rebounds, including 12 on the defensive glass to notch her second double-double of the season, and added five assists. Jensen went 4-6 from the field with nine points, all in the second half.

UW-Whitewater will play host to Illinois Institute of Technology Thursday, December 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm in Kachel Gym.
