MILWAUKEE -- Four Alverno College players scored in double-figures as the Inferno snapped a five-game skid and won its home opener, 63-51, over Dominican University Tuesday night in Reiman Gymnasium.
Mollie Mikyska tallied game-highs of 20 points and 20 rebounds for her third double-double of the season andJulie Gallegos recorded her first double-double in an Inferno uniform with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Tessa Mersberger scored a career-high 14 points and K.D. Jones added her career best with 10 as the Inferno won its home opener for the fourth-straight season and is now 13-1 in Reiman Gymnasium in the past 14 contests.
Alverno (2-6, 1-4 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) led by 14 at halftime, and increased its lead to a game-high 23 points with 12 minutes to play before the Stars (0-8, 0-4 NACC) made a run which cut the lead to single digits, 57-48, with 2:53 remaining.
The Inferno made free throws down the stretch to push the lead back to double digits and seal its first NACC victory of the season. Alverno was 9-of-10 from the line led by Mersberger's 6-of-6 performance.
Despite losing the turnover margin 16-11, the Inferno cleaned up the glass with a 53-41 rebounding advantage.
Sidney Montano led Dominican with 18 points and Shamia Clark added 15 as the visitors were held to 28.8 percent shooting in the contest.
Alverno, which began the season with seven-straight road games, will host its second-consecutive home game on Saturday versus Concordia University Wisconsin. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
