GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Kally Verkaik knocked down a three-point basket and Kayla Engelhard added five points during an eight-point spurt as Calvin College repelled an Albion College run and went on to score a 84-57 victory over the Britons in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action.
Tori Henning scored a three-point basket to pull Albion within five, 16-11, midway through the first half. Albion missed opportunities to whittle the deficit as it turned the ball over on its next three possessions.
Calvin went on the eight-point run to extend the margin to 24-11 and it led 36-24 at halftime.
Engelhard produced seven points as Calvin opened the second half on a 19-5 run. Calvin led by as many as 31. Engelhard led all players with 19 points. Breanna Verkaik and Kally Verkaik finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively, and Hannah Acre chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Darian Payne and Oreyana Curry were the double-figure scorers for Albion. Payne made all seven of her shots from the field and finished with 16 points. Payne also pulled down eight rebounds. Curry produced 13 points, one shy of matching her career-high.
Albion, 5-2 overall and 1-1 in games against MIAA rivals, will take a few days off from competition to focus on fall semester final examinations. The Britons' next game is a Dec. 13 date at Alma College.
