Inferno Iced In Second Half Of Red Rivalry Game

More news about: Alverno

MILWAUKEE -- The Inferno's streak of five-straight wins over Milwaukee School of Engineering was snapped Saturday night as the host Raiders topped Alverno College, 52-42, inside the Kern Center to reclaim the Red Rivalry Cup.

The Inferno (1-6, 0-4 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) shot an impressive 61 percent from the field in the first half, compared to the Raiders' 38 percent, but still trailed 28-25 at halftime after committing 14 turnovers.

Mollie Mikyska made both free throws on a trip to the line with just under 12 minutes to play in the game to give Alverno its first lead of the contest, 38-37.

However the Raiders (3-1, 2-1 NACC) responded by scoring the next eight points and the once hot-shooting Inferno went cold as MSOE rolled to the win.

Julie Gallegos scored a layup with 4:04 left and Mikyska with 25 seconds remaining for the only Inferno points in the final 11:53. The visitors made just 24 percent of their second-half shots after a stellar opening-period performance.

Gallegos put up a game-best 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting and added four assists to lead Alverno. Mikyska added 14 points while Katelyn Bartlett led the Inferno on the glass with a game-high nine rebounds.

Megan Kroll led MSOE with 14 points, while Holly Denfeld and Margaret Pugh added 11 each.

Tonight's contest marked the end of Alverno's season-opening seven-game road swing, as the Inferno play in the home opener on Tuesday versus Dominican University in Reiman Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
