HENRIETTA, NY - Roberts Wesleyan College won its second straight Wendy's Classic title on Saturday night, defeating the University of Rochester women's basketball team 69-63 at RIT's Clark Gymnasium.
The Redhawks (4-1) used a big 19-1 run in the second half to grab a seven point lead with under six minutes in the game and held off the Yellowjackets, sending UR home with its first loss this season and fourth runner-up finish overall in the Wendy's tournament.
Rochester (7-1) jumped out quick, earning early six point leads of 8-2 and 12-6 before Roberts Wesleyan answered with a 7-0 burst to grab a 13-12 lead 10 minutes into the game.
Rochester's lead would then stay within six until the rest of the half until the final possession when an ill-advised Redhawk 3-pointer led to a fast break opportunity for UR's Sarah Kaminsky to put the Yellowjackets up by eight, 31-23, at the halftime buzzer.
UR's bench had a strong half, scoring 22 of the teams 31 points. Kaminsky led all scorers with nine points in the first 20 while Emily Lewis added seven points.
Five Alexandra Leslie points to start the second half built Rochester's lead out to 11 a minute in, but Roberts Wesleyan would score seven of the next eight points to get back to within five with 17:06 on the clock.
After reaching its second 11-point lead of the half with 15:30 remaining, Roberts Wesleyan began its huge rush, scoring a 12-1 run over the next 5:29 to tie the score at 44-44 with 10 minutes left.
The run continued after the Redhawks tied it up, extending out to 19-1 allowing Roberts Wesleyan to build a 51-44 advantage with eight remaining in the game. UR went cold during the stretch, shooting 0-9 from the floor and committed four turnovers.
Twice in the closing minutes Rochester would cut the lead to one but Roberts withstood the rally hitting the big shots and forcing the turnovers needed to win its second straight Wendy's Classic title.
The Redhawks' Samantha Courtney would drain a huge three pointer from the right wing to put Roberts up by four, 65-61 with 1:34 left in the game. After a UR bucket, Necedah James swished a jumper to regain the four point lead.
After a UR miss and a couple of fouls, Marissa Sell missed the front end of a one-and-one for Roberts, giving the Yellowjackets a bit of life, but after the rebound, Rochester turned the ball back over to the Redhawks and Lucy Covely would thensink two insurance free throws to seal the win.
Leading the way for Rochester was Kaminsky who finished with 13 points. Skye Dole added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench as well. Leslie had seven points and eight rebounds and earned a spot on the All-Classic first team along with senior Ally Zywicki who added four points and three assists in the title game.
Roberts' leaders were James who poured in a game high 16 points, Courtney who chipped in 14 and Covley and Sell who each scored 10. James and Sell were All-Classic first team selections with Courtney being named the tournament's MVP.
The Yellowjackets next game will be on Wednesday night at 7 pm when UR travels to Medaille College. Rochester closes out the 2014 portion of its schedule next Saturday at home against Ithaca at 3 pm.
