Turnovers prove costly for Saxons

CLINTON, NY—The Alfred University Saxons women's basketball team was downed by the Hamilton Continentals, 83-50, with turnovers casting a shadow on the Saxons' play.
 
The Saxons were in a close game at half time Friday evening, but a second half flurry of baskets on part of the Continentals put distance between the two teams.  AU's Amanda Off(New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) led the Saxons with 19 points and five rebounds.
 
In the opening seconds the Saxons grabbed an early lead, but Hamilton answered back to steal the advantage.  The Saxons then rallied to take the lead by one with 11:28 to go in the first half when Off hit a free throw to make the game 11-10.  The Continentals reestablished the lead with a three-pointer seconds later.  Hamilton then went on an 11-5 run to get a solid lead on AU.  At the half the Continentals were on top, 36-26.
 
Midway through the second half Hamilton went on another run against the Saxons, shutting them out over five minutes and posting 14 points of their own.  The Continentals then rode their large lead the rest of the game to an, 83-50, final.
 
The Continentals were able to capitalize on the miscues of the Saxons, scoring 33 points on 22 turnovers.  The Saxons shot 16-of-47 (34.0%) on the night and 4-of-14 (28.6%) from 3PT range.
 
Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) had a strong outing adding 15 points and two rebounds.  Emilea Harrison (Conensus, NY/Dansville) led the Saxons on the boards, grabbing seven rebounds and adding seven points. 
 
The Saxons (2-5, E8 0-0) look to rebound when they travel to Newburgh, NY to take on Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday afternoon.
