Hawks down Bison in conference opener, 73-59

BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior captain Amber Litwinko (Berlin, Conn.) scored a game-high 23 points in Nichols College's73-59 loss to Roger Williams University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Wednesday evening.

Senior captain Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbraham, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with three blocks and a pair of steals as the Bison (2-2, 0-1 CCC) outrebounded the Hawks 46-34.  

The Hawks (3-4, 1-0 CCC) Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) and Emma Klis (East Northport, N.Y.) notched back-to-back jumpers to open the game and spark a 13-4 RWU run. Nichols managed to climb back into the game and grabbed a 19-17 lead when sophomore Taylor Daniels (Dudley, Mass.) canned a three-pointer with 7:56 left in the first half.

The Hawks kept the game close but weren't able to regain the lead until the final minute of the half when Lisa Lutz (Downers Grove, Ill.) dropped in a basket to break a 26-all tie. Litwinko dropped in a pair of free throws for the Bison with 14 seconds left, but Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) sent RWU into halftime with the lead (31-28) by knocking down a three-pointer in the closing seconds.

RWU opened the second half with a 13-5 run to go on top by 11. Nichols, meanwhile, missed 11 of its first 13 shots early in the half. The Bison pulled within eight (44-36) following a layup from Wegrzynek at 10:48, but a three-point play by Klis 14 seconds later put the Hawks back up by 11. They led by double-digits for most of the remainder of the game.

Ariola finished with 20 points and four assists in the win while Nicholas had 18 points and three rebounds. Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.) scored a career-high 17 points with three assists and three steals.

The Bison open the home portion of their conference schedule on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. contest against Salve Regina. Roger Williams heads to Springfield, Mass. for a 1:00 p.m. contest at Western New England on Saturday.
