YORK, Pa. – Alexus Stroud scored 19 points while Brionna Johnson and Tiara White added double-doubles to give the Wesley College women's basketball team a 78-70 win at York (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The Wolverines improve to 4-2 overall with their third-straight victory while the Spartans fall to 3-3.
A freshman from Smyrna, Del., Stroud made 6-of-14 from the floor including a trio of three points while Johnson and White recorded 14 points apiece along with 14 rebounds by Johnson and 11 by White. Tiyanna Gibbs was the fourth Wolverines in double figures with 13 points while Brittney Kerns and Roniece Williams off the bench also chipped in offensively with nine points apiece.
Both teams battled for position in the opening minutes but a quick 10-0 run sparked by Gibbs helped give Wesley an 18-9 lead with 13:35 left in the first half. The Spartans battled back to tie the game twice before the end of the period but Wesley finished the final six-plus minutes with a 13-5 run thanks in large part to threes by Williams and Gibbs as well an old-fashioned three-point play by Stroud with 28 seconds remaining.
York got as close as four points at 45-41 with 16:21 to go in regulation but the trio of Johnson, Williams and White combined for eight points during a 11-2 run to extend the lead to 13 points. The Spartans stopped the bleeding momentarily but Johnson answered right back with a layup despite the foul seconds later, resulting in another three-point play, giving Wesley its largest lead at 59-45 with 9:45 left.
Once again the Spartans did not go down without a fight, closing the gap to within five points with 4:37 remaining but Stroud scored seven-straight points and added a late free throws for Wesley down the stretch to seal the victory for the Navy & White.
Wesley returns home on Wednesday, December 3 when it hosts Marymount (Va.) as part of a 6 pm CAC doubleheader at Wentworth Gymnasium.
