Trees Free Throws and Ondik's Career-High 26 Lifts Tigers to Season-opening Victory

Milwaukee, Wis. - Savannah Trees hit two free throws with 4.5 seconds left to lift DePauw to a 69-68 win over host Wisconsin Lutheran at the Paul F. Knueppel Classic. The game was the season opener for both schools.

In a back-and-forth second half, the Warriors gained a 68-67 lead on Kristen Schulz's layup with 1:08 remaining. The teams then exchanged turnovers before Trees drew a foul on a drive and drained both charity tosses. Wisconsin Lutheran advanced the ball into the forecourt before calling timeout with 1.5 seconds remaining. Schulz missed an inside shot as time expired.

The Warriors led early by as many as six before the Tigers came back to take as much as a 10-point advantage on the way to a 33-25 halftime lead.

DePauw maintained that lead until the hosts knotted the score at 49-49 with 8:47 left. The Tigers briefly led by four on a couple of occasions but the margin stayed within two points over the final 3:35.

Emma Ondik came off the bench to score a career-high 26 points in 29 minutes as she hit 6-9 three-pointers. Trees followed with 12 points and Lauren Abendroth added 11.Abby Keller and Taylor Howard each grabbed seven rebounds, while Keller had three assists.

Schulz led Wisconsin Lutheran with 26 points followed by Taylor Bahr with 14 and Maggie Gartner 13. Schulz added a game-high 12 rebounds for a double-double. Bahr also had a double-double with 10 assists. 

DePauw shot 40 percent from the field and knocked in 10-18 three-pointers, while the Warriors shot 39.3 percent. The hosts outrebounded the Tigers, 31-30.

The Tigers, ranked seventh in the coaches' preseason poll and ninth by D3hoops.com, face #11/#14 Wisconsin-Whitewater tomorrow at 5 p.m. CST.

The Warhawks knocked the Tigers out of the NCAA quarterfinals last year after DePauw topped them for the 2013 national title. All three meetings between the two schools have come in NCAA postseason play.
