More news about: Trinity (Conn.)

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College women's basketball team dropped its home opener on Saturday afternoon, falling, 86-57, to Western Connecticut State in non-conference action at Oosting Gymnasium. With the loss, the Bantams moved to 1-3 on the year and the Colonials improved to 3-1 overall with their third straight win.

Trinity played the visitors tough in the opening half, trailing by 10 entering the break. In the second stanza WCSU pulled away to hold on for their second consecutive win versus the Bantams.

Over the first four and a half minutes of the game, the Colonials opened on a 13-2 run capped by a Caroline Brasa three pointer. Trinity would respond with a 9-0 run of their own to cut the lead to just two after a layup by sophomore swing player Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.). Western stretched their lead back to double digits following a jumper by Alyssa Eannotti midway through the half and maintained the lead throughout the rest of the opening 20 minutes.

In the second half, Western remained hot from the field and a stout defensive effort kept the Bantams offense at bay.

Trinity was led offensively by junior center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) with 13 points and six rebounds, while senior forward Taylor Higgins (Merrick, N.Y.) added 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. Landy played well off the bench for the Bantams scoring seven points and dishing out a team-best four assists.

Western Connecticut had a balanced offensive attack as five different players scored in double figures led by sophomore guard Colleen Cosker with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Eannotti recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards while Brasa and freshman guard Kaitlyn LaBonte both added 13 points apiece.

The Colonials shot 47.7 percent from the field and held the Bantams to just over 30 percent shooting. Both teams committed 13 turnovers and Western had 28 assists to Trinity's 11.

Trinity returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25, with an out of league contest on the road versus Keene State. The tilt with the owls gets underway at 5:00 p.m.
