Cortland Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Trinity, 68-48

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Cortland outscored Trinity College of Connecticut 37-15 in the second half, including a 14-0 run early in the period, and the Red Dragons defeated the Bantams, 68-48, during Day 2 of the Skidmore Invitational.

Cortland junior Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) shared the team lead with 12 points and was named the tournament MVP. The Red Dragons finished 2-0 at the season-opening tournament, which featured a predetermined schedule and no official champion.

Freshman Kerry McHugh (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) made 4-of-7 3-pointers and finished with 12 points and three rebounds. Dumas totaled 12 points and six rebounds and sophopmore Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) added 10 points, including 2-of-3 shooting from 3-point range.

Senior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) chipped in with nine points, six rebounds and three assists. Senior Sarah Seger (Wantagh/L.I. Lutheran) scored eight points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds and senior Rae Frasier (Schenectady) contributed six points and six rebounds.

Sheena Landy led Trinity (1-1) with nine points, six rebounds and three steals. Taylor Higgins also scored nine points and Christina Raita added six points and three assists.

Trinity led 8-2 to start the game, but Cortland came back and led 23-17 after a McHugh trey with 7:38 left in the half. Trinity fough back and led 33-31 at the break. The Red Dragons opened the second half with a 9-0 run on a Dumas layup, a Wolstenholme jumper, a Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) 3-pointer and a Lindsey Minor layup, to take a 40-33 lead.

With the score 42-36, Cortland put the game away with a 14-0 run from the 15:59 mark to the 10:08 mark.The streak started with a Dumas layup and 3-pointers by Chapko and Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) and was capped by two Seger baskets and a Frasier layup.

Cortland will host St. Lawrence in a non-league game Friday at 7 p.m.
