SWARTHMORE, PA – Host Swarthmore (1-1) jumped out to a 17-1 lead after five minutes and never looked back in a 73-47 victory over the Hartwick College women's basketball team Sunday in the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament at Tarble Pavillion. The Hawks fall to 0-2 on the season.
All-Tournament selection Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) paced the Hawks with 11 points. She also grabbed five rebounds. Anna Hickey (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) contributed 10 points and six boards.
The Garnet would hit four three-pointers in the opening five minutes to grab the upper hand. The Hawks trimmed the lead to eight following eight straight points but a 16-4 Swarthmore run would push the margin to 20 points, 33-13, with just over five minutes left in the half.
Five points from Hickey, another four from freshman Kirsten Bresson (Bow, NH/Bow), and two from Stone made it an 11-point game with less than three minutes left and the Hawks settle for a 38-24 deficit at the break.
The Hawks had a cold start to the second half as they did not connect on a field goal for eight minutes. 'Wick missed its first 10 shots of the period until Hickey's three-point play at 12:02, but the damage was done as the Garnet still held a 23-point advantage, 53-30. Swarthmore would maintain at least a 23-point edge the rest of the day.
Sophomore Courtney Cirillo (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) contributed six points for the Hawks on the day. Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) added five points and a team-high eight rebounds. Christina Graziadei (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany Central) had five points and five rebounds and Bresson and Jess Bellai (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) each had four points and three rebounds.
Swarthmore was led by Elle Larson's game-highs of 25 points and nine rebounds. Abbey Deckard scored 12 points and Melanie Ackerman added nine.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday at Tufts. The Jumbos were ranked fourth in the D3hoops.com National Preseason Poll.
