UC Tops Potsdam in Season Opener

The Utica College women's basketball team opened up the season on a high note as it downed host SUNY Potsdam 65-54 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. 
 
Senior Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) compiled a double-double as she pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, including nine off the offensive glass, and added 11 points.  Classmate Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) led all players with 19 points and added seven boards, while junior Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) added 12 points. 
 
Utica found itself down 31-26 at the half, but the Pioneers rallied to outscore the Bears by 16 in the final 20 minutes to steal the victory. 
 
Senior Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) chipped in with nine points on one three-pointer and going 6-for-9 from the line, while Amanda Henderson (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) added seven points.  Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West), Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet), and Kelcei Edmonds (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) also put up points for UC. 
 
The Pioneers return to action Tuesday as they open up home play against Oneonta.  Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Clark Gymnasium.
