SWARTHMORE, PA – Hartwick's women's basketball team trailed by just three points at halftime but could not overcome a blistering second-half shooting performance by Oberlin in a 66-46 defeat at Tarble Pavillion in Swarthmore, PA Saturday.
The Yeowomen made 14 of their 18 shots in the second half for a shooting percentage of 77.8%. They also hit 3-of-5 from three-point range and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore guard Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) led all scorers with a career-high 18 points. She also had a game-high five rebounds. Sophomore forwards Christina Graziadei (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany Central) and Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) added seven and six points, respectively.
Oberlin jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after making its first two baskets inside the opening 30 seconds of the game. Foreman and Stone buckets brought it back to 5-4 and the first half remained close the rest of the way. The Yeowomen managed to open up an 8-point lead with just over 12 minutes left in the half, but an 8-0 run for the Hawks tied the game. Stone and Graziadei each had four points in the spurt.
A Lindsey Bernhardt three-pointer at the 8:46 mark would put Oberlin in front for good. The Hawks trimmed the margin to one point on two occasions later in the half and they hit halftime down three points, 28-25.
In the second half, the Yeowomen didn't miss a shot from the floor until the 13:49 mark but the Hawks still kept their opponents within reach. A Jess Bellai (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) jumper made it a 37-34 game with 12:29 left. Back-to-back three-pointers from Oberlin's Christina Marquette in 26 seconds, however, pushed the Yeowomen lead to double digits, 45-34.
The Hartwick deficit grew to 16 points with just over seven minutes left and 20 points with under three minutes to play. A basket from Stone and a three-pointer from Anna Hickey (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) at the horn made it a 20-point game.
Katie Lucaites led Oberlin with 17 points. Marquette finished with 15 points and Lindsey Bernhardt added 13.
Hartwick plays tomorrow against host Swarthmore at 1 p.m.
