Ohio Wesleyan University shrugged off a poor shooting performance in the first half and rallied for a 61-52 win against the Hamilton College Continentals at the Buffalo State College Betty Abgott Invitational on Nov. 15.
Sarah McQuade led the Battling Bishops (1-0 overall) with 17 points and five assists. Taylor Dickson dropped in 15 points off the bench. LaNiece McRae posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and Hanna Fedorka was credited with four steals.
Sam Graber '16 paced Hamilton (0-1) with 14 points and a career-high five steals. Caroline Barrett '17 andSamantha Srinivasan '18 added 10 points apiece. Theresa Salud '17 passed out a career-best four assists. Graber, Srinivasan and Lauren Getman '18 grabbed six rebounds each.
McQuade's 3-pointer with 9:41 left gave Ohio Wesleyan the lead for good at 45-44. The Continentals stayed within four points down the stretch and a layup by Srinivasan made it 54-52 with 4:24 to go. Those were the last points of the afternoon for Hamilton as the Battling Bishops finished with a 7-0 run.
Neither team led by more than five points the whole game until the final two minutes. There were 12 lead changes and six ties.
The Continentals held a slim 25-24 lead at the half. Hamilton trailed 16-15 with 6:32 remaining in the first half but went on a 6-0 run for their largest lead of the afternoon at 21-16 with 4:27 left. Srinivasan made two baskets andAdrianna Pulford '15 ended the spurt with a jumper. A layup by Barrett with 14 seconds left gave the Continentals the edge at the break. Ohio Wesleyan shot just 24 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Both teams shot 35.6 percent from the field for the game. The Battling Bishops held a 46-36 advantage on the boards, and the teams combined to commit 50 turnovers.
Hamilton takes on Thiel College in the tournament's consolation game at the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Sunday, Nov. 16, at noon.
