Gwynedd Mercy Downs Manhattanville, 67-61, In Season Opener

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - Two players went on to finish in double digits as Gwynedd Mercy won its season home opener, 67-61, over Manhattanville College Saturday evening in the 2014 Tip-off Tournament.

Senior Kelsey Yori and junior Chandler DiFebbo would lead the way for the Griffins and set the pace of the game early. Yori would hit double digits before the end of the first half and Chandler would come up big defensively going into the break with three steals.

After shooting 32.3% (10-31) in the first half, the Griffins and Valiants were tied at 28 points apiece. Gwynedd went on to shoot 74.2% (23-31) from the line to help solidify the win.

The Valiants had the advantage in rebounds at 54, with senior Alyson Caiazzo leading the way with 21, along with 18 points.

The last ten minutes of regulation put the Griffins to the test as they gave up the lead for the first time in the half. However, Gwynedd's defense would not relent as they pulled away to win by six.

Chandler would close out the day with 14 points and Yori added 12. Senior Natasha Matthews would come up big on the boards with 13 rebounds and also add 9 points.

The Griffins will face Lebanon Valley College in the championship at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Lebanon defeated Haverford College 59-44 in the first game on Saturday afternoon to solidify their spot in the final. Manhattanville will meet in the consolation game at noon against Haverford.
