Cortland Nips Coast Guard at Day 1 of Skidmore Invitational

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) scored 22 points, including the go-ahead free throw with 52 second remaining, as Cortland opened the season with a 60-55 win over Coast Guard Academy during Day 1 of the Skidmore Invitational.

Cortland will face Trinity (Conn.) on Sunday at noon during the second day of the pre-determined tournament. Trinity defeated Skidmore in Saturday's other contest.

Dumas, playing her first game in a Cortland uniform after two seasons at Hartwick, finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) added 10 points, three assists and three steals and sophomore Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) scored nine points and registered three steals.

Also for the Red Dragons, senior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) finished with eight points and nine rebounds and senior Sarah Seger (Wantagh/L.I. Lutheran) grabbed eight rebounds.

Meghan Fornaro was Coast Guard's lone double-figure scorer with 21 points. She hit 5-of-7 shots from 3-point range and also led the Bears with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Gill Gerton scored seven points and Alexi Howland finished with six points and six rebounds.

Coast Guard held a pair of 8-point leads in the first half and took a 31-28 advantage into the halftime locker room. In the second half, neither team led by more than four points until the closing seconds. Coast Guard led 55-52 after a Jamie Waterman free throw with 3:06 left, but Chapko knotted the game with a 3-pointer at the 2:53 mark.

The game remained tied until Dumas was fouled with 52 second left and hit the first of two foul shots. She finished the game 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. Chapko recorded a steal with 30 seconds left and Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) sank two free throws with 17 seconds remaining to put Cortland ahead 58-55.

Chapko helped preserve the lead with another steal at the 14-second mark and she iced the victory with two foul shots with eight seconds remaining.
