Babson Park, Mass.-Freshman guard Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, MA) tallied 12 points and junior forward Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) chipped in with seven points as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a 59-47 setback to Williams in the opening round of the Babson Invitational Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Anchorwomen (0-1) opened the first half on a 10-4 run, capped by a Korzec layup off a feed from sophomore guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA), with 13:30 remaining in the half. The Ephs (1-0) used a 20-7 run to take the 24-17 lead, but a three-pointer by sophomore guard Meghan Reall (Smithfield, RI) with 1:24 remaining in the frame knotted the score at 26-all, which is where it stayed entering halftime.
A pair of free throws by sophomore Devon Caveney (Andover, MA) pushed the Williams lead to eight, 34-26, with 17:05 remaining in the contest. The Anchorwomen battled back and a layup by Korzec off a feed from Moore with 13:40 left cut the Ephs' lead to one, 36-35. After trading buckets, a jumper by Korzec with 7:48 remaining gave RIC the lead, 41-40. The lead wouldn't hold as the Ephs used a 19-6 run down the stretch to take control of the game, 59-47.
RIC freshman forward Rybecca Gonzalez (Pawtucket, RI) notched six points and a team-high seven boards.
Williams was led by junior forward Katie Litman's (Dallas, TX) 11 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore guard Lauren McCall (Natick, MA) chipped in with nine points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will face tournament host Babson tomorrow afternoon (3 p.m.).
