Women's Basketball beats LaGrange

ROME, Ga—Mel McLean had a career-high 25 points and Berry College scored a season-high of 84 points as they defeated LaGrange Panthers, 84-70, in the SAA-USA South Challenge. McLean was 9-18 shooting and made five three pointers for BC.

Berry started the first half struggling offensively. "We've been off for ten days; we just had to get our legs back and get a feel for the game again," said Coach Stephanie Dunn.

However, soon after, both teams began to pick up speed and score. Megan Walsh committed back-to-back fouls which allowed the Panthers to close the deficit to 23-22. Later, the Vikings went on a 7-0 run close to the end of the first half; at halftime the score was 41-28.

At the half, McLean was leading the team with 18 points, five steals, three rebounds and one assist.

In the second half, Berry continued their intense playing, keeping their lead in the double digits.

"I think our defense really got us going this game," said Dunn. "We got a few good stops on their end and it energized us. When you're playing defense and getting turnovers stops, it makes you feel a little more confident on the offensive side."

The Vikings forced LaGrange to commit 19 turnovers, scoring 17 points on those turnovers. It was all positive for the home team in statistics. 

They outdid the Panthers in field goal, 3-pont and free-throw percentage. Additionally, BC led in rebounds, assists, and bench points.

Chanlir Segarra had 24 points (9-11 shooting), had seven assists, two rebounds and one steal for the home team. Freshman Emma Cook had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings.

Madison Baker scored 16 points for LaGrange (2-3).

Berry (2-1) returns to action on Sunday at the Cage Center against the Piedmont Lions (3-1). Game time is 4 p.m.
