UNE tops RWU for 3rd straight regular-season title

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Kelly Coleman (Portland, Conn.) and sophomore Meghan Gribbin (Windham, Maine) combined for 31 second-half points to power the University of New England to a 65-50 win over Roger Williams University in the regular-season finale between the two top teams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22).

The Nor'easters (23-2, 17-1 CCC) -- ranked 20th in the most recent USA Today Top 25 Coaches' Poll -- won for the 11th straight start to claim their third consecutive CCC regular-season title. Roger Williams (20-5, 15-3) saw its seven-game win streak come to an end. In avenging their lone conference loss of the season, the Nor'easters extended their unbeaten streak at the Harold Alfond Forum to 26 contests.

Coleman poured in a game-high 28 points to pace UNE. She had 18 after halftime and finished the contest with six rebounds. Gribbin scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half, while also contributing five boards and three assists for the afternoon. Big Blue first-year forward Brooke Flaherty (Portland, Maine) came off the bench to add eight points and a game-best nine boards.

For the Hawks, sophomore guard Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) tallied a team-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) added nine points and eight caroms. She made three of Roger Williams' nine shots from beyond the arc.

With the score tied at 42 and 7:35 remaining, the Nor'easters rattled off 16 consecutive points to put the game away. Flaherty started the barrage with a pair of free throws, then Coleman strung together seven straight points. Gribbin would follow with two foul shots and a three-pointer, and sophomore guard Lauren Hayden (Chantilly, Va.) added a fastbreak layup to give UNE a 58-42 cushion with 2:07 on the clock.

Both teams struggled offensively in the opening half. UNE made just 24.1 percent (7 of 29) of its field goal tries, while Roger Williams was no better at 22.6 percent (7 of 31). The Nor'easters led 14-6 halfway through the frame, but the Hawks outscored UNE 13-9 the rest of the way to pull within four (23-19) at the break.

For the game, the Nor'easters held a slight advantage on the glass (44-41) while turning the ball over just eight times. UNE made 18 free throws, compared to seven for the Hawks.

The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship opens up Tuesday (Feb. 25) with a slate of four quarterfinal-round games. Top-seeded UNE will host No. 8 Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7 p.m., while No. 7 Nichols College will head to second-seeded Roger Williams.
