Castleton Cruises on Senior Day, 100-34

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans sent their seniors off in style, scoring 56 first-half points on the way to a 100-34 blowout victory over Green Mountain in their regular season finale at Glenbrook Gym.

All six of Castleton's seniors saw action in the game and they combined for 54 of the team's program-record 100 points. The total breaks the old record of 95 set against Becker back in 2004 and moves the team to 21-3 and 17-1 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Spartans finished the game shooting an impressive 59.2 percent  from the floor and outrebounded the Eagles 48-18. Green Mountain shot 30.4 percent from the field as the team ended its season with a 1-21 record and 0-18 mark within the conference.

Senior Alyssa Leonard shot 11-for-14 and led Castleton with a career-high 24 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Classmate Stephanie Bull added 12 points and two steals while Meghan O'Sullivanwas impressive with 10 points, a career-high seven assists and six rebounds. Jade Desroches added six points, six steals and five assists, and Bryanna DuPont had 12 points, three rebounds and two steals.

The Spartans also finished the game with an impressive 30 assists, as 11 different players registered at least one. They also used 22 steals to force 25 turnovers. Heather Murdough had five and was one of five players with at least two swipes.

Torie Cowell came off the bench to score 13 points and grab three rebounds for the Eagles while Allison Wadsworth added 15 points and one assist but committed 11 turnovers.

Castleton jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but Green Mountain came back to tie it up six apiece with 15:34 left in the half. A fast break layup from Shelby LaBarge off a feed from Desroches put the Spartans in front by two and jump-started a 35-1 run over the next 12 minutes. Wadsworth made it 43-8 with a free throw at 3:21 but Castleton continued to shoot well and went into the break on a 13-1 run for the 56-8 advantage.

In the second half the Spartans opened on a 16-2 run, taking a 72-10 lead on a jump shot from Meghan O'Sullivan. Castleton stretched its lead as high as 68 with 12:08 left in the game and subbed liberally over the final 12 minutes as the Spartans finished with the 66-point victory.

Castleton now moves on to the NAC Quarterfinals at the top seed. The Spartans will now host No. 8 Thomas on Tuesday evening.
