OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team claimed an 88-77 conference victory on Wednesday evening over the NYU-Poly Fighting Jays at the Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury's record is now 7-16 (4-7) while NYU-Poly sits at 2-21 (0-12 Skyline).
In a tightly contested first half, the Panthers dominated their opponents in terms of points in the paint (22-6), second-chance points (11-0) and fast-break points (16-5), but NYU-Poly carried the lead for the majority of the half thanks to 9-of-15 three-point shooting. Tabitha Larsen went 4-of-6 from behind the arc and Alyssa D'Apice shot 5-of-8. With the score 32-28 in favor of the guests with 7:03 remaining, the Fighting Jays grabbed eight of the next 11 points and set the pace for the remainder of the frame. NYU-Poly would be in front 48-45 at the half.
An inspired Old Westbury side took an early lead at 17:57 (51-50) and never looked back. At 12:25, the Panthers—up 63-60 at that point—put together a 10-2 run which extended their lead to 11 points. The advantage would prove to be insurmountable for the Fighting Jays and the Panthers would eventually win by the same 11-point margin.
Old Westbury maintained edges in points in the paint (44-14), second-chance points (29-5) and fast-break points (18-7) throughout the entire game, whereas NYU-Poly's three-point proficiency dipped significantly from the first half (60%) to the second half (30%).
DeAndra Scott registered her 40th career double-double (23 points, 17 rebounds) and currently ranks eight in the nation in that category. Raven Pentz, for the second-straight game, barely missed out on a triple-double, as she posted 20 points (career-high), 10 assists and eight rebounds. Chloe Mellon tied a career-high in points with 14 and set a personal best with 13 rebounds. The center also blocked three shots.
D'Apice and Larsen fueled NYU-Poly, with the former collecting 27 points and 13 rebounds and the latter adding 19 points and three steals.
