William Smith senior guard Erin O'Brien led all scorers with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Junior forward Molly Breen added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Sasha Borenstein chipped in 10 points. Senior guard Jacqueline Murphy recorded eight points, six rebounds, and three steals. She raised her career rebounds total to 880, passing Gwen Scott '82 for second place on the Herons' all-time list.
 
Sophomore guard Cailin Schmeer was the only Dutchwoman to hit double digits, finishing with 12 points. Junior forward Kate Thompson had six points, a team-high seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.
 
William Smith (19-6, 12-4) shot 38 percent from the floor for the game, including 44 percent in the first half, while limiting Union to 30 percent shooting overall. Both teams made six 3-pointers and earned 17 trips to the free throw line, but the Herons took better advantage of their freebies, making 12 to the Dutchwomen's eight.
 
William Smith led by three with 11:08 remaining in the first half, but needed less than two minutes to open up a double digit lead. Junior Ali Pliszka sandwiched 3-pointers around a jumper by Hayter to stretch the Heron lead 25-14 with 8:52 to go. At the other end of the floor, Union went 0-for-5 from the field and missed a pair of foul shots.
 
William Smith seized its biggest lead of the game on a jumper by O'Brien that made it 36-23 25 seconds before the break, but senior guard Amy Loya sank a 3-pointer to trim the Dutchwomen deficit to 36-26 at intermission.
 
In the second half, the Herons led by as many as 11 and took a 51-41 lead with 9:41 to go thanks to a Borenstein triple. Thompson made a layup followed by 3-pointer by senior guard Madeline Granato to close the gap to just five with 7:54 remaining. Breen and O'Brien combined to make four straight free throws to quell the threat and Union trailed by at least seven points the rest of the way.
 
Union (14-9, 6-8) is back in action on Friday, Feb. 21, when the Dutchwomen host Skidmore at 6 p.m. William Smith's next game will be on Wednesday, Feb. 26, when they play in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament. The conference's seeding won't be determined until this weekend's games are completed.
